The adventure of a Broadbutt 10 bore Doglock Colonial Fowler. This is a
truly simple gun. There are only seven parts: a Broadbutt stock without
buttplate, a sheet iron trigger guard and simple pinned trigger, two
sheet iron ferrules, a barrel and a lock. And the lock is simplicity
itself. Any colonial blacksmith could build one using a hammer and a
file and many probably did.
The original colonial fowler is illustrated in “Flintlock Fowlers”. It shows a trigger guard that looks like it was made from an old gate handle. This one was indeed made from a gate handle, only brand new and never used.
